Other Coverage Options: Do I Need Missouri Motorcycle Insurance?

No. when it comes to proving financial responsibility for your car ormotorcycle in Missouri there are several options to choose from. You are required to prove your financial responsibility however, and that is never free. Also, Missouri requires a minimum amount of uninsured and Underinsured driver coverage in case of hit-and-run accidents or an accident caused by someone not in compliance with state minimum insurance requirements.

Deposits: any cash, securities, or duly executed government bond in the amount of $60,000.00 or more may be deposited as an alternative to purchasing a liability motorcycle insurance policy. This sum of money may be less than the combined total of all of the liability insurance requirements, but there is no pay-as-you go alternative.

Self Insurance: religious groups and some other organizations have the ability to file a certificate of self insurance with the Missouri DoR to assume all of the responsibility for their own driving. For more information on declaring self-insurance please call for assistance.

Missouri law enforcement may ask for proof of Insurance during  traffic stops, after traffic accidents and at DUI checkpoints.

Driving Without Insurance and Lapses in Coverage

Insurance companies are also required by the authorities to notify the Missouri DoR of all insurance policy cancellations, non-renewals, new drivers and policy modifications. If you make changes to your motorcycle insurance policy, we’re required to  pass that information along to the Missouri Department of Revenue to avoid any confusion during traffic stops, and to cut back on the number of uninsured or underinsured drivers throughout the state.

Failure to maintain insurance will lead to suspension of  vehicle registration and/or driver license. To reinstate these privileges, fees and future proof of financial responsibility must be filed with the Missouri Department of Revenue.

The ‘future proof of insurance’ requirement is most commonly an SR22 form from an insurance company which is basically an official statement from the company stating that they will continue to provide your motorcycle insurance coverage through a certain date. This can be expensive since SR-22 filings are expensive, and the law requires the owner to carry the SR22 policy for three years following their suspension.
