The following are the absolute minimum motorcycle insurance requirements for the state of Texas. These required amounts are determined by the state of Texas’ Department of Motor Vehicles to be sufficient for protecting other drivers on public roadways from the risk posed by your driving or riding.

If you choose motorcycle liability insurance as your means of demonstrating financial responsibility, you must purchase a motorcycle insurance policy that can provide benefits in at least the following amounts after an accident.

  • $30,000 bodily injury liability for one person in an accident
  • $60,000 bodily injury liability total per accident
  • $25,000 property damage liability per accident

Remember always that these liability insurance limits, are only the minimum amounts required, and any good insurance agent or lawyer will encourage you to purchase additional insurance if...

  2. You could not pay to repair or replace your motorcycle in the event of an accident.

Do I Need Texas Motorcycle Liability Insurance?

No, insurance is just one of many different options for proving financial responsibility in Texas. A liability insurance policy is still the cheapest option for proving financial responsibility however,

There are several liability insurance alternatives in Texas though, and they are as follows:

  1. A current auto insurance policy or car, or binder issued pending issuance of a liability policy (minimum limits of 30/60/25).
  2. A certificate of compliance showing that a surety bond filed with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
  3. A certificate showing that $55,000 in cash or securities has been deposited with the State Comptroller.
  4. A copy of a certificate filed with the DPS that was issued by a county judge (and acknowledged by a sheriff) verifying you have deposited at least $55,000, in cash or by cashier's check, with the county judge.  County judge must be in the county where the vehicle is to be registered.
  5. A copy of a self-insurance certificate issued by the DPS (must own 25 vehicles or more to qualify).

For options 2-5, a certificate of financial of responsibility must be issued by the authorities for you to keep on file with the DMV, otherwise you will not have proof of insurance during traffic stops or when you attempt to register your vehicle or renew registration.

Texas SURE Program

The Texas SURE program is a collaboration of the Texas Departments of Insurance, Public Safety, Motor Vehicles, and Information Resources to make it tougher for drivers to get away with driving without insurance.

Basically Texas authorities now have the ability to cross reference data from all of the above departments and triangulate precisely who is driving without insurance based on policy end-dates, payments made to insurance companies, registration suspensions, and other data.

Basically it’s impossible to avoid tickets and fines for driving without insurance in Texas if you also fail to meet one of the above requirements.
